The Property

The Mournet is a beautifully restored farmhouse that dates back to 1860 and is situated in the heart of the Ardeche in the Eyrieux Valley – about 2 hours drive from Lyon and Nimes and 1 hour from Valence. The wild and unspoilt beauty of the Ardèche countryside holds many surprises not least of all the spectacular Gorges de l’Ardèche and those of the Eyrieux Valley. The Ardeche is a close neighbour to the Massif Central region – another amazingly unspoilt rural region with rolling hills and incredible views. All seasons are great for exploring, walking, wine tasting, chilling-out & enjoying rural France at its finest but each season offers its own special characteristics. May and June are wonderful months to make the most of the wild flowers and late Spring time splendour. July and August are great for an excellent Summer holiday without the rush of the crowds. September can be wonderfully warm and a real late Summer treat and October is just picturesque with the trees donning their Autumnal coats.

The Mournet is a traditional Ardechois farmhouse completely renovated in 1990 to reflect its original charm. Further renovations in 2002 converted the buildings into holiday properties with a touch of modern luxury. Three parts of the farmhouse – the garden level (La Chataigne), the stables in the courtyard (L’Ecurie) and the barn at road level (La Grange)- are now completely independent holiday accommodation from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of this largely undiscovered region. Each property has been created to have its own private entrance and terrace and/or garden with BBQ and garden furniture and each property offers its own unique charm, style and colour scheme with modern comforts, a contemporary feel and a real home away from home. The 12m x 6m Swimming Pool (salt water filter) is situated in the south-facing gardens that slope gently down to the Glueyre River where you can fish for trout, play in the natural rock pools (for kids of all ages) or just enjoy the view. The pool is cleaned daily and boasts a large sun terrace with loungers, parasols and a thermal cover placed on the pool every evening to keep the water at a comfortable temperature. The large gardens are well maintained with little “English touches” and plenty of space has been allocated for games including a table tennis table, swings, slide & croquet pitch. Yoga & Ayurvedic Massage are also available for you to enjoy during your stay at the Mournet. A private yoga session can be adapted to your needs aligning & stretching your body & calming the mind. Ayurvedic Massage is a gentle but energising massage which works on relaxing & recharging the body, uncoiling the stress of daily life, detoxing and allowing the energy to flow freely.... for more information..... A beautiful private tennis court is also available for hire just 5 minutes (on foot) up the road from us. A small footbridge at the end of the garden leads you to the very traditional village (500 metres from us) with its Thursday market, well-stocked village shop, bakery & bar/tabac. Further a-field there is plenty to do and see... your choice...do as little or as much as you like!

We believe that the “Little Extra” touches count. That is why we make sure your stay is as well-prepared as possible. Your bed linen & towels (hand, bath & tea towels) are provided and beds are made up before your arrival so no need to motivate yourself for this after a long day of travelling. You can take a dip in the pool and enjoy a glass of local wine from the complimentary bottle waiting for you in your chosen property. A basket of home grown walnuts also welcome you to Le Mournet for those with a sweet tooth our pillow chocolates are a treat on your first night with us. You can also pre-order a welcome basket (see little extras for details) to save your shopping the day of your arrival. A detailed welcome folder will help you prepare your holiday itinerary with something for everyone we hope.. from a gastro/wine tour to sports and local sightseeing, from canoeing down the Gorges & swinging through trees to relaxing by the pool with a good book....Each property is equipped with flat screen TVs, DVD players, UK and French television channels and Wifi Internet connection

Northern Ardeche Article by Jason Burke The Observer 2008 Heading South down the busy A7 Autoroute du Soleil make the point of turning off early. Before the exits for Vallon and its famous canoe-thronged arch and long before the T-junction for Provence or Languedoc, turn to the west and into the Northern Ardeche - the green or diary Ardeche as the top half of this central mountainous region is known, in contrast with the oliveoil Ardeche further south. Here there are fewer gorges, fewer people, fewer caravans and fewer German school parties. Instead you can enjoy a landscape like a warmer drier Scotland with high moors, plunging valleys, sheep galore, rushing torrents and superb walking on empty well-signposted trails such as the Route des Dragonnades, the road built by Louis XIV's engineers to allow his soldiers to patrol the rugged hills and repress grumpy Huguenots. It is calmer, less crowded and, in many ways, muchmore French than the tourist hotspots further south. There are plenty of hotels but are best off renting a gite. You'll need a car - or at least bikesand strong legs. There's kayaking in the tiny town of Les Ollieres and near Privas there's an acrobranche centre if you want to join the kids sliding on wires through the treetops in a pine forest. And then there is the Rhone Valley shimmering in the summer haze and the motorway packed with all the cars heading further south. Their loss!".
