Guest Comments & News Articles

Northern Ardeche Article by Jason Burke The Observer 2008 Heading South down the busy A7 Autoroute du Soleil make the point of turning off early. Before the exits for Vallon and its famous canoe-thronged arch and long before the T-junction for Provence or Languedoc, turn to the west and into the Northern Ardeche - the green or diary Ardeche as the top half of this central mountainous region is known, in contrast with the oliveoil Ardeche further south. Here there are fewer gorges, fewer people, fewer caravans and fewer German school parties. Instead you can enjoy a landscape like a warmer drier Scotland with high moors, plunging valleys, sheep galore, rushing torrents and superb walking on empty well-signposted trails such as the Route des Dragonnades, the road built by Louis XIV's engineers to allow his soldiers to patrol the rugged hills and repress grumpy Huguenots. It is calmer, less crowded and, in many ways, muchmore French than the tourist hotspots further south. There are plenty of hotels but are best off renting a gite. You'll need a car - or at least bikesand strong legs. There's kayaking in the tiny town of Les Ollieres and near Privas there's an acrobranche centre if you want to join the kids sliding on wires through the treetops in a pine forest. And then there is the Rhone Valley shimmering in the summer haze and the motorway packed with all the cars heading further south. Their loss!".

A selection of comments made by our guests to give you a flavour of what to expect from your holiday whether you are a family with young children, couples looking for a romantic get away or a place to walk and enjoy rural France, groups of friends looking to spend time together or a large family group looking for a place for all to stay with a little independence per family.......or......

The Family View: “What a haven and what a delightful place to stay. Thank you for a wonderful “unwind”. Your attention to details has really made this stay special : from the good night tokens on the pillows: the detail in your welcome pack; to the fact that you recalled our conversation when I mentioned Mo’s upcoming birthday and produced not only cakes but candles too!... we loved the steam train day and all slept well! We hope you keep enjoying life as you share your good energy – we’ve thrived on it!!”
Nina, Myles, Mohan & Amaya Ritson, UK (Holiday in August 2006)

The Cyclists: “We've had a lovely week - your gite is such a lovely rural location. We have enjoyed cycling through the surrounding countryside and returning for a refreshing swim. It has been such a busy week for you with the birth of your new daughter but your professionalism shone through and as guests we felt you never missed a beat. La Chataigne is very well equipped and a comfortable home away from home. Thank you !" Arthur & Dawn Morewood, Ontario, Canada July 2008

Our transatlantic friends: "What a lovely place and atmosphere for our first week in France. For a few years we have been aniticipating spending our 25th wedding anniversary here. We have not been disappointed. Your tasteful decor and grounds, excellent welcome pack, advice on venues and drives have been just right. We especially enjoyed the Auberge de Bougnard with Joel. This area of France is so quiet, friendly and relaxing with as much or as little to do as one wishes. We trust your business will continue to be successful. We will certainly be recommending Le Mournet to our friends. All the best!" Jim and Becky Campbell, Canada July 2008

Our Australian Travellers: "This is our third trip to France and our first to the Ardeche. It has been an enjoyable, relaxing and memorable stay...your Gite l'Ecurie and the facilities of the pool, garden and games combined with the tranquil setting are a credit to you both. The welcome pack and bottle of wine settled us in nicely and the pack proved an invaluable guide to local sights and things to do. You have certainly set a hig standard for the next five weeks of our trip. The wonderful sunny weather from 28-30 degrees was most welcome. Thank you - we will certainly recommend you to our friends." The Gregsons, Melbourne, Australia

The Family view: “This is one of those places where when you get there you don’t want to leave annd when you do leave you hope you will come back. It’s definitely kids idea of heaven – not just a pool but a great garden and a river at the bottom. The old formula of kids happy, parents happy worked a treat here”
Angus, Sue, Georgina, Jessica & Frances

The Family view: "We've had a hugely enjoyable week in a beautiful location. Its been lovely to find somewhere off the beaten track yet with all the comforts of home. The river has been an endless source of amusement for the girls and we've had great families to share it all with. Many thanks." The Bonny Family, London, England August 2008

The Returning guests: "A fantastic week in La Chataigne - it just hasn't been long enough! The property is lovely, in breathtaking surroundings, there's far too much to see and do for one week - what more can I say?!?" What can we say – that we haven’t said before!?! Another fantastic fortnight at Le Mournet just what we needed to relax, unwind and catch up with ourselves. Bringing Callum (aged 4 1/2 months) here for his first trip to France has set him high standards for all future trips! Thank you so much for everything you do to make our holidays perfect and for babysitting this time too! We won’t state the obvious (that we will return) but just look forward to seeing you again and to Callum vistinghere when he is able to make full use of the pool and everything in the area.
(Fourth trip to Le Mournet....Steve, Ju and Callum, Herts.....Holiday May, June, September.... & August 2007)

The Couple’s View: ”So many memories of the Ardeche to take back to England. Fields caressed with daffodils and cowslips, the sunset returning from Gluiras, the wild boar roaming in front of us through the pine forests ....a big thank you to Charlotte and Christian for giving us a fantastic week – one of the best we have ever had in France. We hope to return before too long”
Lynda & Harry, Romsey (Holiday May 2006)

Two Couples spending time together: "We really enjoyed our holiday - beautiful, spectacular scenery and peace & quiet away from the tourists!! Highlights - deep clear rock pool near Burzet, meals at L'Auberge de Bougnard, Le Relais de Sully and Le Truffolier - when we weren't cooking on the great barbecue! Wonderful walks - limited only by the heat - and a great concert in the village - young people's Baroque ensemble - and canoeing at Les Ollières and visits to Aubenas, Le Puy and other smaller villages. Local bakery excellent for bread and variety of goods. Gite beautifully decorated and well equipped. Pool lovely ( and a great asset in the heat!!) Thank you Charlotte and Christian for being so kind."
Jo & Graham Wheeler, Sally & Keith Rose (Holiday August 2003)

The Walking Couple: “The view from this gite (La Chataigne) is lovely and we have enjoyed watching the light and the movement of the trees.... the walks were dramatic ...!”

Family View: "Our two week stay here has been one of the most relaxing we have ever had. The weather has been great and the pool a real bonus - I don't think we realised before how much we would use it! We have enjoyed long walks in the hills as well as to the local shop. We had a great day out at the Indian Forest and enjoyed a trip on the Vivarais Steam Railway - a great day out if you like trains and a good way to see some spectacular scenery."
Patrick, Carol, Ben & Alex Littleboy, Devon (Holiday August 2005)

The Couple’s View: ”Thanks for a wonderful relaxing time. We arrived frazzled and tired. We are leaving refreshed and rested. Just what we needed. From the moment we arrived you made us welcome and at home. The information pack is excellent and made us independent and able to participate in the community. This is a beautiful area...I am sure we will be back.”
Dianne & Stephen (Holiday June 2005)

The Returning Guests: Our second visit to Le Mournet & its just as beautiful as we remembered and the garden looks lovely – worth all the hard work! La Chataigne has a lovely feel to it and we immediately felt ‘at home’. .... Thankyou again for making us feel so welcome and for all the thought youv’e put into making Le Mournet such a fabulous holiday retreat.”
Barry & Nicola, Leicestershire (Holiday June 2007)

The Couple’s View: “Thank you for the effort you have put into the gite planning! Lots of things make a holiday! Your information pack is very useful. The welcome “hamper” thoughtfully put together. Thanks also for the other bits like some sugar, washing powder etc... never worth buying for one week but make all the difference. ...Marron glacé icecream was a first as was Elderflower Kir. All good fun. Thanks for making it all so easy.”
Clare & Chris, Newbury

The Honeymooners: ”Thank you so much for such a wonderful week. We have so enjoyed the truly relaxing and tranquil environment of the Mournet and the surrounding countryside and villages. An ideal honeymoon destination for winding down/recovering from all the wedding excitement.”

Two Couples Sharing break: "How we will miss the sound of silence and the spectacular scenery. Le Mournet is certainly to be recommended as a relief for stress. We have had a wonderful break in an unspoilt region of France……..La Grange is very comfortable and well equipped and the luxury of the pool more than a bonus….we hope to be back before too long"
Sue, Sue, Les & John (Holiday Juen 2005)

Friends Reuniting: The End of the Three Week Aussie Tour of Albon......We have had a wonderful time at Le Mournet. What a fantastic base camp for our Coup du Monde Tour of France. Thank you Charlotte, Christian and Melodie ......for...acting as interpreter, continuously booking restaurants, great massages, excellent local advice, tolerating the en-mass crazy Australian holiday behaviour (indulging the Tarzan call of the wild at night), freindly service and a great location. We won’t forget the crazy tight roads and subsequent rally driving over the Alps “stay right” our mantra! Thank you!
A huge group of Aussies (Holiday September 2007 Rugby World Cup Tour)

The Couple’s View from La Chataigne: "Had a lovely two weeks at Le Mournet. Very relaxing indeed. Lots of peaceful walks in the hills with an abundance of flora and fauna. This is a really unspoilt part of France and the locals we met were extremely friendly…….. The house is really well appointed and spotlessly clean. Charlotte and Christian were perfect hosts and have created a superb retreat from the increasingly busy UK."
Ian and Lynne Twiston, Lancs

Family View: We came here on a last minute rushed internet booking to a part of France we have never heard of before. We brought with us 2 stressed adults, 1 three year old and 1 seven month old baby! We leave sadly to return to return to our lives in Ireland al the calmer, stronger and more peaceful than we have been for some time. Thank you! 3 pointers....1, Your beautiful home & gites are exactly as described on the internet – beautiful, welcoming, clean and equipped with evrything to make us feel at home and with a baby too!. 2. Your descriptions & recommendations in the Welcome Pack are very honest and real. 3. Your peaceful & calm attributes & surroundings work wonders on even the most stressed our guests!

La Chataigne was a superb base - all the facilities you need - the welcome basket was a great start, the relaxed environment with swimming pool, the local shop & tabac, playing boules with the locals - all wonderful. We had fantastic days out - canoeing the 27km through the gorges, climbing Mont Mezenc & sitting in the square in Antraigues drinking wine watching boules - perfect. Eating out was an enjoyable experience - The Auberge de Bougnard, Albon and The Remise, Antraigues our favourites. Thank you Charlotte & Christian for this wonderful place to spend a great break."
